On 6 August the group “In cammino per la pace e il disarmo” (‘Walking for peace and disarmament’), passed by Monte Sole. They had already visited us several times over the years, in a sort of permanent journey to the sites of Nazi-Fascist massacres, where the presence of the bodies and the act of walking are a search for and promotion of peace.
Among the organisers, we meet Lorenza and then Marco Frigerio, one of those people who is easy to talk to and who stands out for his kindness and spirit of collaboration. Many of the group have already been to Monte Sole many times, and Lorenza and Marco help us understand how to plan the day.
The group is interested in how to preserve memory and how to turn it into a tool for peace, so we begin our journey to Casaglia, sharing stories of the group’s experiences and previous journeys.
Marco is an engineer, but he expresses what he himself defines as his ‘humanistic’ side through various projects that immediately strike us and with which we feel a certain affinity: questions of gender, conflict management, transformative justice, peace.
It doesn’t take much to understand Marco’s values and the great energy he devotes to others and to a more just world: after a couple of kilometres, we are already engaged in a discussion about how to hold someone responsible for a wrongdoing while remaining in touch with their humanity, and about ways to transform a situation of violence, starting with what happened in Monte Sole and to the survivors.
The day after we met, Marco had a heart attack in the woods and, despite prompt assistance, including from a nurse in the group, he passed away, leaving all his fellow travellers in shock.
We too were deeply saddened by this sudden loss, after such a sincere and enriching encounter.
The School of Peace bids farewell to Marco with affection and gratitude, because it is thanks to people like him that we believe in change and feel we are in good company on our journey towards peace.
We send Isabella, Martina and Federica a big hug.
