The School of Peace in your library

The season of reading

Often the idea of writing and publishing is associated with the idea of fixing and establishing. For the Peace School, writing and publishing means having an extra tool to launch stimuli, open discussions, encourages debates. Or time is now and we cannot miss the opportunity to contribute to a better world.

Justice, Truth and Reconciliation (English)

This toolkit is addressed to teachers, activists, staff of memorial sites and everyone else that is searching materials for innovative educational approaches for coming to terms with past violations of human rights and shared memory in the community, especially for working with young people.

“Memory Will Teach Us Something” is relying on the yearlong experience of the Scuola di Pace in the educational field and is split into four workshops, each divided into different activities which aim to promote the understanding of the participants and allow a critical analysis of the different layers of memory: personal, familial, collective and institutional.

The toolkit also contains guidelines for the most important factors the moderators have to consider during the design of workshops as well as tips for the recommended materials and the scheduling of activities.

Die authors encourage the educators to adjust the exercises to the context in which they work and have added space at the end of each chapter for notes and comments.

We thank the Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation, one of the projects of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, and especially Sarah Case for her valuable coordination of the project.

Educazione Aperta (Italian)

Educazione Aperta is a great project that collects the experiences of Educazione Democratica, a magazine for political education, that was released from 2011 to 2015 in ten volumes and wanted to represent a different approach to education and society in Italy.

The work group that was founded as Comunità di Ricerca Educazione Aperta (CREA) is composed of people with different professional and technical skills which are all moved by the same passion and a desire for exchange.

In volume 8 you can find two essays that are especially important to us:

“Giving silence a voice. The experience of the peace camps on Monte Sole” and “Co-educating for peace in Gorongosa (Mosambique). Thoughts on an ongoing process”.

E-review (Italian)

“E-Review” is as scientific open-access-journal for contemporary history with over 22.000 accesses every year that was founded in 2014 by the Network of Historical Institutes of Emilia Romagna and is founded by the Italian region of Emilia Romagna. The project that was initiated by the Istituti Storici della Resistenza in cooperation with regional authorities aims to develop cultural activities for the research of the past and communication of historical memory.

In the section #corrispondenze you can also find our “Living with difficult memories. Denial, silence and ambiguity in German families of the post-war era. Chronicles of a commemoration.

Di/segni (Italian/Spanish/English)

“Di/segni” is a digital series of the Institute for Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Milano which should contribute to the propagation of knowledge through sharing the results of the diverse and extensive studies that are conducted by professors and researchers of the institute and young people in education through digital platforms without removing the possibility to read them on paper.

The monographic issue which also contains articles by the Scuola di Pace collects the contributions of the 1st international congress for literature and human rights with the title “Donde no habite el olvido. Herencia y transmisión del testimonio. Perspectivas socio-jurídicas”. Click on this link to read the whole issue.

Heritage Matters (English)

“Heritage Matters” is a series of books that addresses the whole spectrum of questions regarding the connection between heritage of the past and global challenges of the current world.

The series is based on principles of the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS) at the University of Newcastle where these topics are seen as a part of an interconnected whole, from culture to nature, and therefore researches possibilities for every type of museum, gallery, site of memory and each person or organisation that works in or is affected by it.

In the book “Heritage and Peacebuilding”, published by Diana Walters, Daniel Laven and Peter Davis (Published at Boydell & Brewer Limited), we discuss if and how the past can help in building a peaceful present and future.

And the church of Casaglia is seen on the cover.

Landscapes of Violence (English)

It is a journal by the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which aims to promote the dialogue between experts that research the topics of violence, conflict and trauma in the past and present.

Because the main goal is the spread of views and ideas on these topics the issues of the journal and the single articles can be downloaded for free.

Since today Monte Sole is also represented in the paper, even on the cover!

Everything you have to do to understand and think is to read the magazine!

Novecento.org (Italian)

The seminary day “La linea gotica fra ricerca e didattica” (Bologna, 13th of April 2015) originated from one idea: that the historical research, the one that is communicated during conferences and turns into literature through publications, will also always be a test for teaching.

It is not about translating historical materials into an easier language and/or about devaluing them (which sounds a bit too much like adaption or resizing) but about starting from topics that are discussed at a history conference and understanding wether they can provide thematic clues or methodological tools for the renewal or adaption of history lessons in the classroom.

The goal of the conference, which teachers of the INSMLI networks took part in, was to discuss these topics on not just a theoretical level. The speakers which where invited to discuss about the conference “Communities at war in the appenines. The gothic line between history and memory politics, 1944-2014” (Rimini, November 2014) suggested interpretations, analysed patterns and provided examples for best-practice methods.

A rich and inspiring publication, that turned into a dossier for Novecento.org, an online magazine for history education, that is compiled and operated by the National Institute of the Liberation Movement in Italy and its appendant 68 institutes that are spread over the whole country.

In Dossier No. 6/2  (July 2016) we are also represented.

Versus (Italian)

Versus (or VS how it is often called) is one of the first and most famous international journals for semiotic, philosophy and language theory. It was founded in 1971 by Umberto Eco who published it until his death in February 2016. The current publisher is Patrizia Violi.

The aim of Versus is to publish challenging articles which which contribute to the development and progress of semiotics, in a theoretical as well as in a practical sense. The journal is published twice a year and the issues often focus on specific topics which are discussed from different perspectives and with an open approach for other disciplines.

Named after an expression that is used in linguistics and structural semiotics and describes the basic contradictions that a system is based on (e.g. numb vs. loud) the journal reminds of the cultural atmosphere of those years. With time the journal and the semiotic debates in general have opened up to other movements and disciplines.

In Issue 119 from 2014 we are also included.

Museums (English)

Traditionally museums are founded on the basis of collections. Some of the most stimulating and most dynamic museums today are those which are founded on ideas. The topics reach from human rights, social inclusion, peace, war to health, gender, climate change… Their size, budget, reach and goals might be different but all aim to stand out from the crowd and have an impact on the life of the community.

“Museum of ideas: commitment and conflict” is a publication which provides insight in the work of these often groundbreaking but sometimes hard-to-read institutions and highlight what can be learned from their experiences.

Occupation, Resistance and Memory. Italy 1943-45 (German/Italian)

The book is an anthology from a conference and was published in June 2010. From the 25th to the 28th of May 2008 a German-Italian conference with the tile “Occupation, Resistance and Memory. Italy 1943-45. History and Memory”, conceptualised and organised by the Scuola di Pace together with the Hessischen Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (HLZ) and Institute for History and Memory of the 20th Century PARRI E-R, took place. Italian and German historians and researchers met and discussed these topics from the different viewpoints of the German and Italian debate.

Besides history and memory the view was sometimes also focused on the sometimes problematic but always close and inextricable relationships between cinema and literature on the one side and history and memory on the other. The educational perspective of these topics was also considered. Our German partner has published this version of the proceedings of the conference in this bilingual issue with short summaries for each article.
